(I'm pretty sure a lot of my own photographs of strangers stem in form from this photograph. It's haunted me ever since Chuck first showed it to me a number of years ago. This image looks so simple, but details like his shifting foot, the yellow sign in the distance, his wry smile, and the way the trail ends at the same level as that smile all add up to much more than just a man on a dirt road.)
